The
ELVERHØJ Museum welcomes you to one of Solvang's truly authentic experiences.   Enjoy the architecture, the exhibits, and the lovely landscaping of this Danish museum.  Our friendly guides, in Danish folk costume, enjoy taking you on a personal tour.

Listen to the tales of Hans Christian Andersen and learn to make those delicious "abelskiver".  Watch a lace maker at her trade, listen to the music of a Danish composer in our local church and learn the dance steps of the Schottische, Frommelvasen and Sisken.  You'll learn the delicate art of Danish paper cutting and visit our museum built in the Danish farmhouse style. (Working exhibitors not always available.)

The name "Elverhoj" (pronounced Elverhoy) was taken from Denmark's most famous folk play,  "Elverhoj," written in 1828 and still performed.   Translated as "elves on a hill"  the story involves a king's visit to the night world of the dancing female wood spirits.

Brandt-Erichsen's Dream:  Former residence of one of Solvang's most artistic families is now a community museum devoted to the Danish American pioneer spirit and the colorful heritage of Denmark.

In 1950 the Brandt-Erichsen's built the remarkable structure that became their home, in a style derived from the large farmhouses of 18th century Jutland, northern Denmark.   Many details of the bindingsvaerk style are incorporated.

The front door, carved by  artist Viggo, shows one of the elf spirits with her forest friends. (click for photo.)

Viggo Brandt-Erichsen was an internationally recognized artist and sculptor.   Martha, his wife, was an accomplished water colorist and teacher.

The Elverhøj Museum is two blocks south of the main commercial district.  Walking distance although parking is  available with limited space and time.   Handicap accessible both parking and building.
