The Archival Video Project begins with a documentary of Atterdag
College. The second building which served as a folk school from 1914 into the 1970's
boarded students and was a social center for the Solvang community.
Most of the Danes who settled in Solvang in 1911 - 1915 arrived from
other American states, mainly Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan and Nebraska. The harsh
winters of the Upper Midwest prompted a search for farming opportunities in a milder
climate, and the establishment of a planned Danish community. Old photographs,
documents and pioneer artifacts evoke that era (1910 - 1940) when Solvang was a quiet
colony of traditional Danes living an isolated existence in which their culture thrived.
A diorama representing the Solvang village from 1911 to 1936 is nearing
completion. It will soon be on display at the museum. Photo
