Solvang

"Old Man Block", as he is remembered by friends, gave up his hammer and anvil for brushes and easel at the age of 70, and in less than ten years produced over 500 paintings.

He was a Scandinavian blacksmith who moved to Solvang where he lived and worked from 1914 until he retired in the 1940's. Serious and quiet by nature, slight of build, and never without his cigar, this unique artist created paintings that reflect a subtle delicacy immersed in fantasy and American History.

"Old Man Block" had a pretty little wife to whom he seldom talked.  His two children, Rogna and Aage, both moved out of Solvang many years ago.

It is always remembered that when a circus came to Solvang in the 1920's the Block lot with repairable machinery, plows, harrows, hay mowers, etc., acted as the stage.  We could sit on the machinery seats and watch the dancing dogs, a few monkeys, and a donkey or two -- what a thrill!!

It is said he never went to church nor participated in town events.  In fact, it was considered an oddity to see him walking in town with his best suit on, hands in his pockets, felt hat, and the inevitable cigar.  by Monica Fauerso Kramer
