Doug Stokes relates that
the Los Angeles Times has removed
Shav Glick's Friday
articles on
auto racing and relegated it to the
electronic news service. For those of you
who love Shav's
Friday column as much as I do, please
contact the Times and tell them that we
cannot lose this
great news source for automotive racing
fans.

*Petersen Automotive Museum
and Checkered Flag 200
presents: An Evening with
Andy
Granatelli,
on Thursday, November 10, 2005,
6:30 p.m. Join us for a
supercharged evening
with the legendary Andy
Granatelli, “Mister 500.” No
words can describe the dynamic
life of
Granatelli, a racer, designer,
automotive expert, businessman
and promotional genius. Best
known for his technically
innovative entries into the
Indianapolis 500, including the
banned
turbine-powered cars of the
late '60s, Granatelli made
countless contributions to
motorsports
and to the automotive industry
during his long and illustrious
career. Granatelli is known for
making “STP” a household name
and has been inducted into 21
Halls of Fame in twelve
different categories including
automotive, business and
philanthropic entities. In
addition, he is
recognized as a generous
philanthropist and raises
millions of dollars each year
for various local
and national charities. The
tribute evening will include a
buffet dinner and film program.
Plus,
Dave McClelland, noted
motorsports announcer, will
conduct on-stage interviews with
Granatelli
and some of his fellow drivers
and crew. Special guests include
George Follmer, Vince
Granatelli,
Dan Gurney, Parnelli Jones,
Joe Leonard, Art Malone, Paula
Murphy, and Danny Sullivan. You
will be captivated by stories
of Granatelli’s daring speed
attempts and the racing
innovations that
he has brought to the world.
Great racing cars will also be
on display. Reservations are
$100
per person for Museum members
(members may purchase up to two
tickets at this price); $125
per person for nonmembers.
Price includes a buffet dinner,
soft drinks and parking. A cash
bar
will be available. Mail your
payment to: Granatelli Tribute,
Petersen Automotive Museum, 6060
Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles,
CA 90036-3605. Credit card
payments may be faxed to
323-930-
6642. Tickets will not be
mailed—your reservations will be
held at the door. Don’t miss
this
historic event—Make your
reservations today! An Evening
with Andy Granatelli is
generously
sponsored by Ford Motor Company. For additional information, call 323-964-6359 or visit the

*Upcoming events at The
American Hot Rod Foundation.
Steve Coonan
and the Rodders
Journal have done a
14 page article on the
foundation and its activities.
The issue should be ship-
ped next week. Jim
Miller and I have been
busy developing the photo
gallery for our web site.
This will be launched on
November 5th. It has roughly
1000 photos, all of which have
been cat-
alogued with full
descriptions. The gallery has an
"Advanced Search" option that
allows you to do
combination searches, e.g.
belly tanks, El Mirage, 1947,
Bill Burke,
etc. We now have over
20,000 photos and plan to keep
adding 300 or so every month.
Because of Jim's meticulous
research and degree of
knowledge, this gallery will
become an essential tool for
journalists, hot
rod historians and hot rod
enthusiasts in general. And the
great thing is that most of
these photos
have never been seen before as
they are from private albums and
collections. So many of you
have let us scan your photos
and for that we are truly
grateful. Now we can not only
preserve
them but also allow hot
rodders the world over to enjoy
them and learn more about this
great
sport. If you have photos of
interest that you would like us
to scan please let me know.
Again,
the deal is: we scan them and
return the originals to you
along with a CD of the photos.
Third,
we will be replacing our "Ask
Pioneers" section with "Ask The
Expert." We figured that as we
have over 150 hot rod pioneers
in our address book who have
thousands of hours of expertise
and knowledge to dispense, it
would be a great way to let you
all have the chance to ask any
of
them a question....about
anything. Whether you are
building a hot rod and need
advice or have
a question about an historical
event, this is the place to get
it answered. Henry
Astor, The
American Hot Rod Foundation,
325 Lafayette Street, #4, New
York, NY 10012. Telephone:

*President Mike Cook
visited El Mirage lake yesterday
and determined that it will be
too wet to
run this weekend. The Nov
12-13 meet is cancelled.
The SCTA is
making arrangements to
reschedule our event for the
weekend of Nov 19-20. However,
there are numerous issues with
doing so; EG permits,
insurance, conflicting lakebed
scheduled events, emergency
equipment,
toilet availability, catering,
rules meeting, reps meeting,
predicted rain and ability of
clubs to
provide patrol personnel for a
2 day event on the beginning of
Thanksgiving week. Lots of
folks
have other plans. Please be
courteous and patient. Your most
accurate and prompt source of
information is here on our
website. (Roy Creel, Mike Cook,
Bob Falcon and George Callaway)
