*I just received the Readers digest
in the mail and there is an article
in it about the Hero's Fireman,
Policeman etc. that went out of
their way to help with the disaster
relief in New Orleans. Last
Sunday I went to the Long Beach
swap meet and ran into Jim
Travis. I'm sure most of
you
either know Jim or have certainly
heard of him. Jim is a long time
Bonneville racer, record holder,
restorer of famous race vehicles
and a fairly recent member of the
Bonneville 200mph club (about
2000), a life long dream of his.
What I want to tell you about Jim
has nothing to do with racing.
Jim heard that the Red Cross was asking for volunteer's to go to New Orleans and help in the
relief effort. He went to the
local chapter, in Whittier, CA, I
believe. He signed up and within a
day or so he was on a plane to New
Orleans to help. I spent about an
hour talking to Jim and he
said it was one of the most
gratifying things he has ever done
and he came away feeling warm and
fuzzy about his efforts. Jim's
not a Fireman or a policeman nor to
my knowledge has ever been
one. Here's just a regular guy
that dropped whatever he was in the
middle of, took off from L.A.,
spent a couple of weeks or so and
did what only a few folks would do.
He helped feed folks,
put up sand bags, shuffled folks
stranded to safety and any other
thing that was asked of him.
Why!! Because he was asked and he
did it. I've know Jim for quite
awhile and I am glad that I
got to know that side of him. A
real Hero and he's a racer. We
should all be proud to have Jim
as "one of us." Thanks Jim.

*On Monday night (Oct 17) I
was honored to receive the first
ever Delphi Safety Award for
my contributions to auto
racing safety over the past 30
years. Delphi is the division of
General Motors concerned
with all GM safety programs. They
are the sponsors of the Indy
Racing League Trackside Fire
and Safety Team, the group I have
been working with since
the league's formation.
Before that, I worked with the
Trackside Team of The Indianapolis
Motor Speedway as the
Secretary of the United States
Auto Club Safety Committee, a
position I continue to
hold. During this time I have
developed a rescue device which
many
Paramedic users of the
device have identified as the
world's ONLY Rapid Extrication
Device. To my LGB QB
associates...the very first
recipient of the Continental
Casualty
Award for Safety in Auto
Racing was Ted Halibrand
in 1957. The very large trophy,
which
is on display at The
Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum
features an actual magnesium
racing wheel which Ted
manufactured. The trophy
presented to me features the
figurine
holding the Shoehorn Device
I invented, in good proportion,
high overhead. The Motor
Racing column in Friday's LA
Times (10/21) may have more
information regarding this
award since I had a long
conversation with Shav
Glick yesterday. (Bob
Falcon)
*Heads up everyone, The
October Meet (El
Mirage SCTA) has been
canceled – see below.
Please spread the word as
not everyone gets e-mail. The El
Mirage Trash day on Saturday
is still on - register
between 7:30 and 9am. There will
be pancakes for the early arrivals
for a $2 donation. Please
attend if you can – our group is
the largest single user of the
lake and we need to support
the BLM there.
Also, you can drop off toys for
the Christmas
gift program this weekend.
New and unwrapped, they will be
very much appreciated by
the local community. (Becca
Livingston) President
Mike Cook visited
"Lake" El Mirage this
morning and found the entire
racecourse flooded from the recent
rains. The October meet is
officially cancelled.
Information concerning the Nov.
meet will be found here as things
develop.

*Pebble Beach
is a show that in the past hasn't
had much room for Hot Rods and
Customs
but in recent years, those
in charge have come to realize
that our field is certainly
worthy
or recognition among
collectors. This year they
invited some Customs into the
show and
Barry Mazza
sent us a few pictures of the
Customs entered in the Pebble
Beach Show. It's
good to see the Pebble
Beach folks finally catching on.

*The State of Massachusetts is
considering SEMA model
legislation (HB 2156
and HB 2212)
that would create a vehicle
registration classification for
street rods and custom vehicles
and
provide for special license
plates for these vehicles will
be considered by the
Massachusetts Joint
Transportation Committee on
Thursday, October 27th.
Introduced by separate sponsors,
H.B.
2156 and H.B. 2212 define a
street rod as an altered vehicle
manufactured before 1949 and a
custom as an altered vehicle
at least 25 years old and
manufactured after 1948. Both
bills allow
kit cars and replica vehicles
to be assigned a certificate of
title bearing the same model
year
designation as the production
vehicle it most closely
resembles. (Jason Tolleson)
*...Well that finishes up
the best season ever! 5
National event wins, 3
Regional wins and 2
wins on the Carolina
Ford Show Tour, and a win at
the "World Finals" in Bowling
Green,
Kentucky. It's been a
heck of a ride. Other news,
feature story in "Race
Pages" probably
a spring 2006 issue.
This week on ESPN2 "Inside
Drag Racing" with Bret
Kepner, will
air a piece on the car.
Times are Wednesday 10/27, at
3pm and again on Sunday 10/30
at 11 or 12 noon (check
your cable listing). Special
thanks to Bobby Torres
for helping
me make this happen!
Thanks to everyone from Race
Officials to people helping me
at
the truck stops.
