*Don Weaver, who puts on the Legends of Ascot
Reunion in October at Perris Auto Speedway,
in Lake Perris, CA, called to let us know that the following racers
have passed away: Wayne
Weiler, Danny Curry and Duncan Emmons.
Wayne Wyler raced sprint cars and midgets out
of Arizona. Danny Curry had a heart attack while driving his
pick-up truck two weeks ago. And
Duncan Emmons had a heart attack on the straightaway while driving
his Curtis-500 sports car in
a vintage race in Coronado, CA. Our condolences to their families.
(from Don Weaver)
*Wayne Weiler passed away. Wayne drove the ex-Dean
Lister-Chevrolet, formally driven by
Bill Pollack, for Fike Plumbing in CalClub and
SCCA races. (Ron Cummings)
*Former Indy driver, Wayne Weiler, took the checkered flag Oct 13, at age 70. The local paper
mentioned an apparent heart attack. Wayne finished 24th in 1960,
driving the Ansted-Rotary car
"owned" by Mari Hulman George. Weiler crashed on
lap 103 while running 9th. The following
year he drove Lindsay Hopkins car to a 15th place
finish. He dropped out after 147 laps with
a wheel bearing failure. Two weeks later he suffered serious head
injuries in a sprint car race at
Terre Haute when he and Jim Hurtibise tangled.
The accident effectively ended Wayne's driv-
ing career except for a brief comeback on the West Coast in the
late 1960's. He maintained an
interest in racing and Weiler Farms sponsored midget drivers at
Manzanita for several years. The
latest being local driver, Ricky Johnson. Wayne
was a proud member of the Arizona Racing
Hall of Fame. (Walt Jorgensen, Sun City West, AZ)

*Services for Duncan Emmons, will be held on Oct
22 at 10am, at Wiefels and Sons Mortuary in
the City of Palm Springs, located at 690 Vella Road, just off
Ramon Road west of Gene Autry
Trail. From the Palm Springs Desert Sun, Oct 14, 2005:
Duncan Emmons died doing what he
loved – racing. Race car driver and auto detailer Duncan Emmons,
a Coachella Valley pioneer,
died Saturday in San Diego at age 70. The owner of Duncan Emmons
Body and Muffler Shop in
Rancho Mirage had a reputation as the man to see for a
one-of-a-kind paint job. He moved to
Rancho Mirage in the mid-1950s, when he was 19, to start his own
business. "There were only
about 400 people living in Rancho Mirage at the time," Emmons
told The Desert Sun in 2003. "It
made being in the body shop business a pretty easy deal." A
25-year veteran of vintage car rac-
ing, Emmons suffered a fatal heart attack while racing his 1953
Kurtis 500S at his favorite racing
event, the Coronado Classic Speed Festival, a news release
said. About one-fourth of a mile
from the finish line in his first race, officials drew the red
flag as Emmons appeared to lose control
of his vehicle and veer off the track. The race ended safely
with no competing cars affected by the
accident. Emmons was pronounced dead at Sharp Memorial Hospital
in San Diego, where he
was taken by ambulance from the racetrack at Naval Air Station
in Coronado, according to the
release. Emmons, who raced the car just two months earlier at
the Monterey Historic Races,
maintained a winning position as he maneuvered through 11 laps
of the challenging 2.6 mile course.
Final race results listed Emmons as the official fourth place
finisher. Emmons was born Feb 19,
1935, in Detroit. His family moved to Southern California in
1943, and he learned the auto body
business while living in Los Angeles. After moving to the
Coachella Valley and going into business,
he had his share of celebrity clientele, including Red Skelton
and the family and friends of Elizabeth
Taylor. Emmons' survivors include his wife of 36 years,
Darah Emmons of Rancho Mirage, four
sons, Duncan Emmons Jr of Palm Desert,
Dan Emmons of Palm Springs and Scott and
Jeff
Preble of Rancho Mirage, one daughter,
Catherine Emmons of Studio City, and four grand-
children. Duncan joined The Fabulous Fifties in 1985 when we
had our reunion exhibition race at
the Palm Springs Road Races revival. Duncan very generously
loaned a J2 Allard to Bill Pollack,
recalling Bill’s many victories during the fifties. (Art Evans)

*Email received from the Jim Murphy
racing team, "Sept 2-4 we made the long haul to
Pacific
Raceway in Kent, Washington for the 1st
Goodguys Northwest Nationals. In the semifinals
we lost a close one to the eventual winner,
Brett Harris. Our next event was the Governors
Cup race at Sacramento Raceway...we did manage
to share the win when the finals were
called off due to an accident and track
curfew. Sept 30-Oct 2, California Hot Rod Reunion
at Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield. This is one
of the two biggest meets of the year and
we've won it in the past...we simply got to
aggressive for the first round of eliminations and
smoked the tires very early in the run giving
the win to our opponent. Now it's down to
one more event for the 2005 season. Oct 28-30
we'll be back at Bakersfield for the Good-
guys 7th Fuel & Gas Finals and we're hoping to
rebound..." See

Suddenly. (Charles Rollins)
Editor's notes:
Charles Rollins is Ray
Brock's son-in-law and he has a great
website for hot rodders and
racers at
www.bench-racing.com. Suddenly is
the car that Ray Brock and Wally Parks
ran
at Daytona Beach in 1957 to set a stock car land
speed record a day before the Detroit auto-
makers were going to start a large media
campaign by setting their own records. Suddenly
was
known as the Hot Rod Magazine Special.
It went 166mph on the sands at Daytona Beach,
and later at the Bonneville Salt Flats, in Utah,
Ray Brock raced to a speed of 183mph. It is
now on display at the Wally Parks NHRA
Motorsports Museum, in Pomona, CA.
