*Pat Miranda passed away on September
29, 2005. Patricio Miranda served as Mayor of
Irwindale, California, when the track was opened in
1999. Pat Miranda served 44 years in
public office in the city of Irwindale. Adding to the
loss was the fact that Pat's wife of 50 years,
Mercy Miranda, passed away 3 days
after her husband. Our condolences go to the Miranda
family who have helped the racing community over the
years at Irwindale. (Doug Stokes)
*Attached is a note from Jim Snyder
regarding the loss of one of his partners on the Salty
Cudy.
Bear (Gary Smith) was also a test
pilot for McDonnell-Douglas and Boeing. Glen Barrett
*Very sad, we lost Gary (Bear) Smith
yesterday! Bear was a key member of the Salty 'cuda
team back in 1990 when we set the record. He
was the one who talked me into putting a
Big Block in my Plymouth, his boat motor! I
haven't talked with Karen yet. I will let you
know what I find out about services etc.
Jim Snyder
*Dear Flight Test Friends, I received a call from Ralph "Guch" Yaguchi last night sadly
informing me that Gary "Bear" Smith
and another person were killed in a plane crash
yesterday. Guch was informed by Fred
Hamilton. I do not have any details
regarding
this tragedy except for the attached news
article that I found on the web regarding an
airplane crash in the vicinity where Bear had
lived. Bear will be dearly missed by all who
had the pleasure of knowing him and working with him. Sincerely, Michael L. Shim

Last year at
the World finals we were there during some of the
filming. Earlier I had provided photos of Otto
Crocker's timers in the old open air
scaffold used in the 50's and 60's. They made mock up
duplicates of them. A lot of the early lakes and
Bonneville cars were there for the back ground.
The rear engine roadster the Black Widow I
drove there in 1957 was near the front of the start-
ing line. They duplicated the pits with the old Bell
tent, the Firestone tent and several others. Talk
about remembering the way it was, wow. Lots of
pictures were taken by us. Wes Potter
and
Ron Christensen may have some they
can forward to you guys. I can't wait to see the movie,
sure want a copy of the tape if it ever comes out.
