'Track Roadsters: The Road to Indy,' Coming
to Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum
New exhibit to run Oct. 22, 2005-Jan. 15, 2006.
From the dirt tracks of yesteryear to the hallowed
asphalt at Indy, the history of track roadsters is
coming to the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum as a
new exhibit. "Track Roadsters: The
Road to Indy," will run from Oct. 22, 2005 through
Jan. 15, 2006, in the Museum's special exhibit
hall and will feature several authentic track
roadsters set on a dirt-track diorama, as well as rare
period photos, memorabilia and film footage. The
exhibit is presented by Irwindale Speedway.
Performance Racing Industry is a supporting
sponsor. "This is an opportunity to learn the history
of
this seminal sport which contributed so much to
American Oval Track racing as we know it today,"
said Greg Sharp, curator of the Parks Museum.
"Legendary track roadster drivers such as Troy
Ruttman, Manny Ayulo and Jack McGrath went on to star
at Indy. In fact, 73 track roadster
drivers qualified for the Indy 500 and 19 of them won
it!" Sharp said the exhibit is in conjunction
with Dick Wallen's new book, "Roaring Roadsters - The
Road to Indy." There will be special
events during the show's run, including a gala event
tentatively set for Tues., Nov. 22 and a
Saturday morning panel discussion sometime in early
January 2006. The Track Roadsters show
is the latest in the Museum's on-going race-related
displays such which have included the Salute
to Parnelli Jones, 100 Years of Ford Racing and the
Edelbrock Performance Legacy exhibits.
Named for the founder of the National Hot Rod Association, the Wally Parks NHRA
Motorsports Museum presented by the Automobile Club of
Southern California houses the very
roots of hot rodding. Scores of famous vehicles
spanning American motorsports history are on
display, including winning cars representing 50 years
of drag racing, dry lakes and salt-flat racers,
oval track challengers and exhibits describing their
colorful backgrounds. The Wally Parks NHRA
Motorsports Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday,
10 a.m. to 5 p.m., PST. Current
NHRA members are admitted free. Admission for
non-members is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors 60
and older, $3 for juniors six through 15, and free for
children under the age of five. The Museum is
also available for private parties, meetings,
corporate events, weddings and special group tours.
The Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum is located at
Fairplex Gate 1, 1101 W. McKinley
Ave. in Pomona. For further information on special
exhibits, museum events or directions, call
909/622-2133 or visit

*Wally Pankratz, a great veteran
retires at Irwindale Speedway, on November 24,
2005. By
Doug Stokes. His racing record should see him
shortly in the Hall of Fame. His story-telling
ability
should have seen him on the stage, doing stand-up.
His physical prowess and knowledge of the
game should have seen him coaching
championship-level college football. And his
personality
should have seen him in political office as perhaps
a crusading congressman, or a sensitive senator.
Instead, here's Wally Pankratz, 57 years old,
sitting dazed in a USAC Midget racked up on the
Irwindale Speedway crash wall midway between turns
three and four, with one of the safety crew
screaming, "Billy!…Billy!" two inches from his face,
trying to knock the cobwebs and cotton out
of his head. Wally had already ridden his own car
into (almost) that very same spot during practice,
damaging it beyond the kind of repair that would get
it going that night. Friend and fellow racer
Billy Sipe loaned Wally a car so that he could run
in the main that night (after all it was the Turkey
Night Grand Prix, a race that both he and his father
both competed in). Wally (with the TV in-car
camera as usual) was most likely as pissed off as he
was stunned, sitting there in another wrecked
midget, embarrassing for a guy who had a rep. for
racing hard and clean and for not going on his
head very often. Ok, so here's an EMT in the bright
yellow fire suit sticking half his body into the
tight little cockpit and yelling: "Billy!…Billy! Are
You Alright? Billy! To Wally, who, up until that
moment was almost wishing that he was somewhere
else, maybe even someone else, that crash
guys words and the action going on around his just
didn't compute. Pankratz knew that he had
crashed pretty hard, but not THAT hard, he sure
thought his name was Wally and these guys were
yelling at him, and calling him "Billy." "Whoa, I
musta hit harder than I thought!" Wally took that
licking, and kept on ticking (big time) by going on
to win the 2000 USAC Western States Midget
Championship. His record shows a studly sixty three
Supermodifieds main event wins, forty-three
Midget main events, and seven Sprint Car
victories. He was the Ascot Midget Champ in 1977,
and the Super Modified Champ in '81. His 2000 USAC
championship was perhaps one of the
most popular of any USAC driving star's ever. Fans
and friends celebrated this guy's driving
abilities long and hard, but the real celebration
for this guy is in the number of people who he has
helped, encouraged, trained, counseled, commiserated
with, had a cold one or two with, listened
to, advised, taught, trained, or just plain
befriended. (Doug Stokes)

*Irwindale begins life
after Stokes, By
Keith Lair, San Gabriel Valley News
Staff Writer
Saturday night will be oval racing program
No. 291 in the history of Irwindale Speedway.
But it
will be the first without Employee No. 1,
communications director Doug Stokes.
Oh, Stokes
plans to watch some of Saturday night's
program. But it will not be as part of the
track's manage-
ment team. The Duarte resident, who was the
last original employee of the company, left
earlier
this week to become a part owner of
Autobooks-Aerobooks in Burbank. Stokes,
a fixture of
Southern California motor racing public
relations for nearly 30 years, says he will
probably
venture to the track at about 7:30 pm, after
the venerable Burbank store closes. It will be
only
the second time in the history of the track
that Stokes, seemingly the speedway's No. 1
ambassador, won't be in his press room
office by noon; the only other time it
happened, he was
in the hospital with pneumonia. "Everyone
here has been really, really good," Stokes
said. "I hate
to leave in midseason, with four nights
left, but the situation at my new employment
requires my
presence. This new adventure is an
opportunity for ownership for me in a field
that I've loved for
a long, long time." Stokes might not be
well known by those who chance upon a track
visit once
in awhile, or even by season-ticket holders.
But he is a key cog in the Irwindale
machinery. He
has no control over the track's racing
program, but for those who want something
special, even
if it's a quick behind-the-scenes look,
Stokes has his hand stuck in the process
somewhere. He
knows nearly everyone in the motor racing
community, and frequently gets them to the
track. Last
December, the American Auto Racing Writer
and Broadcasters Association awarded Stokes,
64,
with its Jim Chapman Award
for outstanding contributions in public
relations. For once in his life,
Stokes -- who can talk a mile a minute --
was speechless. He was also selected NASCAR's
Team Player Award in 2001 during Speedweeks
at Daytona International Speedway. "His love
of Irwindale Speedway is phenomenal," track
general manager Bob DeFazio
said. "He's a great
guy and dedicated to the speedway and the
sport itself. He has incredible enthusiasm.
He has
made my job easier. Guys like him are few
and far between." Love for the track? Stokes
is the
only employee who drives around in a car
that looks like it is ready to go racing, with
the logo for
Irwindale in prominent places and the
track's series sponsors also placed
advantageously on his
car. But his love for 54-year-old Autobooks
happened long before the current track was
even a
dream; he was a junior in high school in
Covina. That's when he began his frequent
visits to the
Burbank store, which also draws the famous,
like Tonight Show host Jay Leno. "So,
when I was
visiting owner Chet Knox,"
Stokes recalled, "I saw a sign in the window
for help wanted. I
told Chet that when I retire, I'm going to
apply. Chet said, ‘Why not now?"' They
agreed by
handshake, and Stokes became the company's
general manager and vice president. Knox says
Stokes could eventually acquire control of
the store. "It's not like I haven't worked
behind a
counter before," said Stokes, a former
Studio City Camera worker. "I've worked with
inventory,
taking care of stock, selling." However,
his biggest influence has been on Southern
California
racing. He was the executive director of
the International Kart Federation, watching
racers like
Michael Andretti, Scott Pruett
and Bryan Herta
before they grew into the sport. He was the
righthand man to Mickey Thompson's
off-road racing series, which exposed the
desert sport to
stadiums throughout the United States. He
handled supercross media for Suzuki and then
became the first public relations director
at Perris Speedway, which many call the finest
dirt track
facility in the country, and until this
week, the only public relations director at
Irwindale, called by
many the nation's best short track. "The
people I have worked with are awesome," he
said.
"There is a certain camaraderie, I know I'm
going to miss. Like on Turkey Night." Stokes
was
on the ground floor in the development of
the track. Pasadena's Victor Cuilla,
the owner of Twin
Palms restaurant, and Stokes spent many
hours formulating the track's concept and
working
behind the scenes with the city of Irwindale
for more than a year before the project got
off the
ground. Eventual Irwindale Speedway CEO
Jim Williams formally hired
Stokes and general
manager Ray Wilkings at the
same time once the facility appeared to
receive the go-ahead. The
pair shared a small mobile office for months
on a landfill that had nothing but dirt, a
facility layout
on the wall and a lot of dreams. Yet, Stokes
would call reporters nearly once a week to
tell of
progress, even if only dirt had been moved.
"We had many fond memories in the beginning,"
Wilkins told Stokes this week. DeFazio said
he has not made an immediate decision on a
replacement, and Stokes will serve in an
advisory role until then. Autobooks-Aerobooks
sells
books, magazines, scale models, DVDs, videos
and other items about nearly every make of car
and airplane made. "You never know who
you'll meet at this place," Knox said. "It's
always
been a focal point for the faithful, a place
where the California car culture is celebrated
in print by
many of the people who are a vital part of
it." A prime example, Stokes says, is NASCAR
broadcaster Mike Joy. "Do
you know who that is?" Stokes said he told
Knox when Joy was in
the store. "A regular customer," Knox
said. Joy said Leno told him about the store,
and he visits
every time he is in Southern California.
