Some of you know already through word of mouth and some of
you happen to have called
the office today, but for those of you who don't know
yet, it breaks my heart and saddens
me deeply to convey this news. Topper
Chasse passed away this morning. Barbara is
still
making arrangements, so we have no details yet on a
service. I am at a loss for words right
now but I know many of you loved him and will miss him.
(Theresa)
*I have the information now for the funeral services for
Topper Chasse. Wednesday, September
14, 2005, 12:45pm. Calvary Cemetery 4201 Whittier Blvd,
Los Angeles CA. In lieu of flowers
a donation to the following would be appreciated to:
Downtown Women’s Center, 325 So. Los
Angeles Street, Los Angeles, CA 90013, or call
213-680-0600. (Theresa)
* "Topper Chasse started racing in
drag racing at an early age with the typical Ford road-
ster. Topper began road racing, a 356
Porsche, in the CalClub and SCCA events beginn-
ing in 1955 or '56. He spent the next ten years
competing in the Porsche Owner's Club
time trials that were held at all of the local road
race courses. He held several official
posts in these clubs. He drove many types of
Porsche racers and crewed for several other
race drivers. He eventually spent a couple of years
driving in the SCCA TransAm series.
He then raced in the Willow Springs Raceway Road
Racing Stock Car series. The last few
years Topper vintage raced 914 Porsches in VARA and
HSR-West events. He kept his his
SCCA, Porsche Owners Club, Porsche Club of America,
VARA and HSR-West drivers
licenses current right up to the end." (Ron
Cummings)
*Topper Chasse had so many friends, and
so many of you have offered to assist Barbara with
Topper's museum, the memorabilia and cars there. She appreciates everyone's offers of help, as many of you are much more knowledgeable with the kinds items that are at the museum. However at this time she is overwhelmed with the amount of offers she has had. Right now her goal is to just get through the funeral tomorrow. She will not be making any changes or decisions regarding the museum or any of the cars for probably months and when she does she will have an executor handle all the details. She does appreciate all the kindness and generosity of the offers, it's just more than she can deal with right now and prefers not to deal with it just yet but wanted to convey her thanks to all those who have offered. I also want to thank all of you who have called and emailed with their kind words and thoughts and who have shared a little of their treasured memories of Topper with me. I envy those of you who have many years of fond memories. I always loved listening to his stories. Thank you, Theresa

*I can't remember if I told you about Don's (Weaver)
heart attack and emergency quadruple by-
pass surgery. If not let me know and I will fill you in on all the details. Most important right now is to let your readers know he is well and on the mend and that the event is still on for Oct 22, and that we hope everyone will support it. (Belita Weaver)

keep the history of Drag racing alive," said Robin
Millar. Go to

more details on the work of the late cartoonist, which his
family has kept going. "Pete Millar,
1929-2003, was a great drag racer, brilliant cartoonist
and a best of friends to those who knew
him. We lost Pete on February 28, 2003 but his work lives
on. His loving wife Orah Mae and
daughter, Robin will continue to offer the works available
on this site and more neat stuff Pete
did that was previously unavailable," said Robin.

*THE SALT IS HEALING- Much Optimism for World Finals.
Mike Waters, Mike Manghelli
and Larry Volk visited the Bub meet on Thursday to assess
the salt conditions and the course
prep. techniques used by the Bub folks. They gave me a
preliminary report this morning. The
condition of the salt overall is much improved. Probably a
result of the August rains. Areas that
were rough in August are now much smoother. There are
significant areas still wet at both ends
of the BNI courses used at SW in Aug, but
the center parts are dry and very smooth. The first
1.5 to 2 miles of those courses still are rough with pot
holes and standing water. The Bub folks
ran a 5 mile course in the area between the 2 Speedweek
courses, starting at what would be the
7.5 mile mark and running back toward Wendover.
Then for their (2 way) return run, starting at
about the 2.5 mile point and running back. There is water
and wet salt beyond their course in
both directions. The area we first staked out for courses
in July to the east of the SW courses
is dry and fairly smooth. The salt driving over to this
site is considerably smoother than it was in
August. Use of the new drag built and used by Bub has
been offered to SCTA/BNI. While the
drag has lots of adjustments for the blades, we will have
to test it and make decisions about what
to use when the time comes. It is way too soon for any
decisions yet. The meet is on until it is
cancelled. We will just have to see what cards mother
nature deals us or leaves us in early
October. We have plans to once again send an advance team
up to scout the best salt and hope-
fully find 1 or with luck, 2 good courses. Roy Creel

*Though the competition is sometimes stiff at the
NHRA California Hot Rod Reunion,
there is
always one winner: the local economy. It is
estimated the Sept. 30 - Oct. 2, 2005 Reunion,
presented by the Automobile Club of Southern
California, will generate more than $6.2 million
for
the communities of Kern County during the
three-day event - double the amount generated just
two years ago. Based on average hotel and food
costs released by the Bakersfield Convention
and Visitors Bureau, those attending this year's
Reunion are estimated to spend more than $4.3
million on lodging and food alone. "Obviously,
the Reunion is important to all the communities of
Kern County due to the substantial economic
impact," said Don Jaeger, president of the
Visitors
Bureau. In 2003, revenue generated by the
Reunion was estimated at $3 million. Doug Heaton,
General Manager of Bakersfield's Doubletree
Hotel, said all 262 rooms at the hotel are
reserved
well before the Reunion rolls into town. "The
Doubletree is the largest hotel in Bakersfield,
yet
we're completely booked nine months before
Reunion weekend," said Heaton. "There isn't
enough lodging in Bakersfield to handle the
influx of Reunion attendees, so fans drive in from
the
hotels, motels and camping grounds of the
surrounding communities." "Last year, the local
TV
station reported that hotel rooms were sold out
50 miles away because of the Reunion," said
Sam Jackson, executive director of the Wally
Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum in Pomona,
Calif., producers of the event. "And it's not
just the hotels that are filling their coffers.
According
to our estimates, more than $1.8 million will be
spent on car rentals, souvenirs, fuel, site
rentals,
campsites and admission fees." Now in its 14th
year at historic Famoso Raceway, the 2005
Reunion is expected to attract more fans than
last year. Also, requests for information and
access
from local and national media indicate an
increased level of interest in the event. "With
more
interest and increased attendance, we expect the
Reunion's direct economic impact on Bakersfield
and Kern County to be greater than ever," said
Jackson. Tickets for the NHRA California Hot
Rod Reunion, presented by the Automobile Club of
Southern California, are available by calling
800/884-6472. A full event credential is $55
for adults and only $10 for those under 16. Full
event credentials include a "goody bag" that
features the highly collectible Reunion Annual and
a
dash plaque. AAA members receive a $5 discount
on a full event credential or $2 off on
Saturday or Sunday daily tickets when they show
their membership card. Camping passes are
available with credential purchase at $50 and
swap meet spaces are just $40 for a 20'x20'
space.
Daily tickets may be purchased at the gate of
Auto Club Famoso Raceway, north of Bakersfield
on Highway 99. For Reunion information, call
909/622-8562 or visit
http://museum.nhra.com.
For the 11th consecutive year, the Automobile Club of Southern California, the largest affiliate of
the AAA, is the presenting sponsor of the NHRA
California Hot Rod Reunion. The Automobile
Club of Southern California has been serving
members since 1900. Today, the Auto Club's
members benefit by the organization's emergency
road service, financial products, travel agency

*Editor's notes-The following was sent in
by Doug Stokes: As many of you have
noted, this
is my last official day at Irwindale Speedway
and Dragstrip. Bear in mind that I've not even
begun
to clean out my desk or take some of the
personal stuff off the walls in the trackside
press room.
I will this week some time. It's been a great
eight years at the Speedway and I really must
thank
my terrific boss Bob DeFazio, and our great
owner Jim Williams, for all their encouragement
and
support along the way. I must also thank all of
the great Speedway staff. Their teamwork and a
can-do attitude have made my job a breeze. And
then there's the media. Their accurate and
enthusiastic coverage of events at Irwindale
have put our name before the world and we surely
appreciate it. I really hate to leave before the
season is over, but the situation at my new
employ-
ment requires my presence (actually, I need to
learn the business before the holiday rush!).
This
new adventure is an opportunity for ownership
for me in a field that I've loved for a long, long
time.
Please, when you're in the LA area, stop by Autobooks-Aerobooks (Burbank) and say hello.
After over 10 year of working at a racetrack
(Perris and Irwindale) I'm going to miss the daily
excitement of that business...However, I'm sure
that becoming a shopkeeper wiil have PLENTY
of "adventure". Most of all I'll miss all my
many friends who make the Speedway what it is.
The
fans, the crews, the drivers, the officials, and
especially "my" photogs and one-man press box
"staff". You guys (Leroy, Mo, Earl, Bobby,
Garry, Issac, Howie) ... Keep at it, you all know
the
drill ... All I ever had to so was unlock the
doors and give you your "pay" (a coupon for a free
hot
dog and a coke), you guys always did all the
rest! THANKS!-STOKES Oh yeah, I'll be back
to help out on the Toyota All-Star and the
Thanksgiving Night GP (how could I miss those two
classics?) (that's me on the right ... the guy
on the left kept trying to hog the shot)
THANKS!

*Sept 10, Irwindale (CA) Speedway
race report: Rod Johnson led all 75-laps of the
Lucas Oil
Super Late Models 25-car feature to
win on the banked, half-mile Irwindale
Speedway. Bryan
Harrell won the 40-lap Vista Paint Super
Stock race on the half-mile. Greg Tucker
took the
35-lap Grand American Modified event
on the third-mile inner track. Steve Stewart
won the
25-lap Pick Your Part Figure 8
contest. Mark Whitson won the Justice
Brothers Pure Stock
35-lap main on the third-mile track. Michelle
Rouse took the Pure Stock women's
league race.
Jesse James, star of the TV Show Monster Garage, became part of a controversial fracas during
the 11-car, 25-lap Figure 8 race. James'
bumper hooked Harry Kuenniger's bumper at the X
intersection. James continued, but Kuenniger's
car stopped. Kuenniger then drove against oncom-
ing cars towards turn three and just missed
James' passing car. He went out of his way and
tried
to ram James' car two more times. On the final
attempt Kuenniger cut from turn three and rammed
the right side of James' car as it exited turn
four. Kuenniger left his car and jumped up and
down
on James' car. James emerged and fists flew
before the two angry drivers were separated. An
Irwindale Police patrol car at the track for
traffic control drove onto the track and into
the infield.
Officers put Kuenniger in the police car and
removed him from the premises. (Courtesy of Tim
Kennedy's Irwindale Speedway report)

*URGENT LEGISLATIVE ALERT;
Massachusetts Bill to Ban the Sale/Installation
of After
market Exhaust Systems to be Considered on
Tuesday, September 13. A bill (H.B. 2011) to
ban the sale or installation of “an exhaust
system which has been modified in a manner which
will
amplify or increase the noise emitted by the
exhaust” will be considered by the Joint
Transportat-
ion Committee on Tuesday, September 13. The
bill has been revised from previous versions to
exclude limited-use “antique motor cars.”
This amendment represents a clear attempt by the
bill’s
sponsor to divide the automobile hobby in an
effort to gain cleaner sailing for this
restrictive and
damaging piece of legislation. We Urge You to
Call or E-Mail Members of the Transportation
Committee Immediately to Oppose H.B. 2011.
For those interested in attending the hearing to
show their opposition to the bill, the
committee will meet on Tues., September 13 at
the following
address and time: Capitol Building, Room A-1,
Boston, Massachusetts. 10:30 a.m. H.B. 2011
ignores the fact that aftermarket exhaust
systems are designed to make vehicles run more
efficiently
without increasing emissions. H.B. 2011 does
not supply law enforcement with a clear standard
to enforce, allowing them to make subjective
judgments on whether or not a modified exhaust
system is in violation. H.B. 2011 fails to
recognize that aftermarket exhaust systems offer
increas-
ed performance, which can make a vehicle safer
by improving its ability to merge, pass, travel
up
hill, etc. H.B. 2011 would make it difficult
for hobbyists to replace factory exhaust systems
with
more durable, better performing options. H.B.
2011 would only exclude “antique motor cars”
defined as those vehicles over 25-years old
which are used exclusively for exhibitions, club
activit-
ies, parades, etc. DON’T DELAY! Please
contact members of the Massachusetts Joint
Trans-
portation Committee immediately by phone or
e-mail to request their opposition to this bill
