*I know some of you already know
that Topper Chasse is
ill and in the hospital with Acute
Lukemia and some of you are just
now hearing it for the first time.
Topper has so many
friends and unfortunately I
don't have everyone's email addresses
and of course not every
one has access to email. We are
hoping that those of you who do
receive this will pass this
along. He is now receiving some
very aggressive chemo treatment and it
will be a lenghty
hospital stay. He has already
had several visitors but with his
illness and the chemo he is
very weak and tires easily. As
the chemo treatments continue he will
be more and more
tired and some days be very ill
from the treatment. Barbara is asking
that that you hold
off visits for now. You can
email or call the office and we can
give you updates on his
condition and let you know when
it looks like he may be up for some
friendly faces to
come see him. Email Topper at
mrcco@mrcco.com.

*Irwindale Speedway,
Irwindale, California, announced
that Doug Stokes,
the track's Director
of Communications, will be joining
the staff of the Autobooks-Aerobooks
bookstore in Burbank,
California. Stokes will become
the general manager and partner
(vice president) in the privately-
held company which owns and
operates the 54 year-old business.
"Doug's our first, best, and
only PR-Guy at Irwindale, he's
been here since day one, and we're
very pleased that this new
position will allow him to
continue a close association with
the Speedway," said Bob
DeFazio.
Stokes will assist the Speedway
with National Events. "We feel very
lucky to be able to welcome
Doug into this operation," said
store owner Chet Knox.
"Doug's been an Autobooks regular
since the mid-sixties, always a
fan, and always a keen supporter of
this establishment. Now he's
coming aboard as a regular part of
its management team, and we couldn't
be more pleased."
"This might be a good opportunity
to publicly thank everyone who has
worked with me on staff
and especially two of the people
who put me in such a great job in
the first place, Jim
Williams
and Bob DeFazio," said Stokes.
"Their vision and hard work have
truly given motor-sports one
of its finest facilities. I also
want to take time here to sincerely
thank all of my colleagues in the
media, " he added. "Without you,
your words, your pictures, and your
voices, we never would
have had the kind run that we've
enjoyed so far at the Speedway."
-----------------------------------------------
*Finally all the water is gone, we
do have some good size "sink holes" &
large areas of
"Potato Chipping" Its hard to
find where we ran the first 3 meets.
Kalbach was in hopes
of going back & starting "over"
again in the area of the May course.
It will be WAIT &
see if the 3 rain storms helped
the conditions. Not too many jerks
had gotten out in the
wet. For some reason, our
VISITOR count is way down this year &
that helps to keep
people out of the wet lake. The
Mayor Editor's notes:
The Mayor is George Callaway
and
he lives at El Mirage Dry Lake and
keeps an eye out so that we have a
nice dry lake in Southern
California to race our land speed
cars on. The SCTA
has been holding land speed time
trials on
El Mirage Dry Lake since 1946.
During the winter months, hooligans
will go out onto the lake
bed when it is wet and run in
circles, leaving the lakebed rutted
and scarred. Volunteers like
George and Chuck Kalbach,
help to preserve the lakebed for our
usage. Our thanks and
appreciation go out to all of the
volunteers.

*Don Weaver has
scheduled his Legends of Ascot
Reunion for October 22, 2005, at
Perris
Auto Speedway, Lake Perris,
California. This year's honorees will be
Bob Hogle, Ted Halibrand,
Alex Morales, Hal Minyard and Danny
McKnight. This event honors the
legendary Ascot Track
that J.C. Agajanian and his family
made famous over in Gardena,
California. The last two events
had over 600 racers in attendance.
Contact Don for tickets at
LegendsofAscot@aol.com or call

*Utah Salt Flats Racing
Association (USFRA) will
conduct the World of Speed on
the
Bonneville Salt Flats on Sept 14-17,
2005 with inspection on the 13th.
USFRA also runs a 130
Club event during WOS for street
legal cars that meet a few minor
safety requirements. Details
are available at
www.saltflats.com. (Gary Allen,
President)
*The IAMA rule and entry
forms for 2005 contest are now ready as a
printable PDF at:

*I'm in the process of putting
together a book on 100 years of
motor sports in San Diego.
It's a picture story from
Barney Oldfield racing at
Lakeside in 1907 to the last outpost
now at Indian country with a drag
strip and quarter mile oval. They raced
on abandoned
Army base roads, auxiliary
airfields, parking lots, fairgrounds and a
high school running
track. Sadly, they have gone. The
last is Cajon Speedway, giving way to
future aircraft
hangars. The only events left are annual events in Qualcomm Stadium, Baja off-road and
the Bayfair hydros. I have most of
the photos from my collection through 1980
so I'll have
to research for some beyond that date. If anyone would like to contribute, concerning
Bayfair and Qualcomm Stadium's
Supercross have them get in touch. Book
should be out
mid-2006. Since the closing of
Cajon Speedway, our hour-long video on
that track's
history should have more appeal.
It's called Short Trackin'
at $19.95 DVD or VHS. I can
be reached (619) 583-0432 or email:
Johnny23@Cox.Net Thanks,
Johnny McDonald

*U.S.F.R.A. Officials
inspected the coarses at
Bonneville on August 28 with
the following
findings: There is still a significant
amount of water on the Salt, but all of
it was west of the current
courses. Only the starting line areas
had some intermittent standing water in
the 1st quarter to half
mile. The current long course is still
rough. However, test drags of the
Speedweek Short Course
showed significant improvement over
the August Long Course. Test Dragging
was done well past
the 7 mile showing a consistent
surface that can be used for World of
Speed. The issue is being
able to reduce the amount of standing
water to the west that could easily be
blown over all
courses at WOS. Officials will revisit
the courses on the 1st weekend of Sept.
to make a decision
on WOS. Findings will be posted on
www.saltflats.com by Sunday Sept.
