*Kevin Doty dies after racing crash.
Kevin Doty, a Burlington driver
well–known on auto
racing circuits in the Midwest, died Tuesday from
massive head injuries suffered in an on–track
accident Sunday night in Wisconsin. Doty was competing in the 25–lap feature race Sunday night
at Angell Park Speedway, outside
Madison in Sun Prairie, when the accident occurred.
Doty,
who had competed at the track for 25 years, flipped coming out of the fourth turn on Lap 12. Vicki Boorse, whose husband raced against Doty on many occasions and who witnessed the
crash, said Doty's car flipped several times, hit the
top of the wall and ended up in the entrance
road to the track outside of Turn 4. Doty was taken by
a MedFlight helicopter to University
Hospital in Madison, where he was put on
life–support. Doctors performed surgery Monday
morning to reduce swelling on his brain. He was taken
off life support late Monday night. Doty,
43, was pronounced dead at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. He is
survived by his son, Kevin Doty Jr, and
his father, Bud. Doty is the second Burlington driver
to die in a race–related accident this year.
Late model driver Brent Slocum was killed June 11, in
an accident in the pit area at 34 Raceway.
Doty's death leaves yet another void in the racing world. "Kevin was a great guy," said Bart
Schneiderman, a local sprint car driver and owner. "He
was a fantastic driver and a great guy. He
was a very talented competitor. This is a tough loss
for the racing community." "As a driver, he
was always professional," said Boorse, whose husband
Dan competed against Doty on the
Badger Midget Auto Racing Association (BMARA) circuit.
"He is one of the most professional
drivers I ever met. If he could pass them clean, he
would pass them clean. No slide jobs. As a
person, with all his accomplishments, he was always
very humble. He was always humble about
all of his accomplishments. It's a tragedy. It really
is." "It was very violent," Boorse said of the
crash. "When I first looked over I could see his head
moving in the car. People started saying
they thought he was all right. But when the emergency
workers got to the car and got him out, he
complained about his head and back hurting. "When I
saw the MedFlight, I knew it was serious.
They didn't have to cut the car to get him out, but I
saw them put him on a (back) board. Every-
one was just in a state of shock. They didn't know how
it happened." The BMARA and the race
track reported Doty's death on their Web sites Tuesday
morning. Angell Park Speedway's
Web site said funeral arrangements are pending at
Runge's Funeral Home in Davenport. A
memorial fund is being established. Scott Bonar,
Burlington, part owner of Midland Performance,
was Doty's chief mechanic for several years. He even
lived with Doty when Doty lived in Milan,
Illinois. "I was close to Kevin, especially when he
moved to Burlington," Bonar said. "He used to
come out to the shop about every day. It's tough."
Doty was one of the most recognizable names
in midget and sprint car racing. Among his list of
accomplishments, Doty won the Belleville Nat-
ionals, Hut 100 and five Pepsi Nationals, as well as
the sprint car portion of four Crown Nationals
at Eldora. Perhaps he was best known for his
second–place finish in the 2002 Chili Bowl, where
he finished behind NASCAR Nextel Cup driver Tony
Stewart. In one of his finest seasons as a
driver, Doty won the Badger championship in '94 at
Angell Park Speedway, winning 15 features
along the way. "I've never seen anyone win a
championship the way he did that year," Boorse
said. "He just made it a clean sweep, week after week. Hot laps, heat races, dashes and features.
He was just dominant." Doty raced occasionally in the
southeast Iowa area, competing in Sprint
Invaders events on several occasions at Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, as well as 34
Raceway. Two years ago, he drove
Schneiderman's car. He was the driver of Bonar's No. 50
car prior to Jerrod Hull. The Sprint Invaders Web
site had a special statement honoring Doty.
"Kevin was an icon in the sport of sprint car and midget racing; a great competitor and friend," the
Web site read. "May he rest in peace." Vicki Boorse
has a special memory of Doty. "When Dan
and I were dating, I remember talking to Kevin down at
the Chili Bowl," Vicki Boorse said. "We
were at a restaurant late at night drinking a cup of
coffee and Kevin was talking about his son,
about how much little Kevin meant to him and how hard
it was being a single parent. "I will always
remember that and how important his son was to him."
Doty, who won his heat race by beating
Dan Boorse earlier in the night, was a fixture at
Angell Park Raceway. "He was a good racer.
He's just been around it a long time," said Kenny
Weiland Sr, owner of Weiland Racing Enter-
prises in Chicago. "I was there when he won his first
race in Sycamore, Illinois. He was driving
his Dad's car. This is just so sad." "Kevin was
probably the best midget car racer I have ever
seen," Bonar said. "He was good. He was so smooth."
"I'll miss him. There was always a void
when he wasn't up there," Boorse said. "He's really
going to be missed at Angell Park Speedway.
"Kevin Doty was Sun Prairie." By MATT LEVINS.

*If the California Hot Rod Reunion had a face, it
would be Steve Gibbs. Gibbs worked for
the NHRA nearly 35 years. His dedication to the
organization, and the sport of drag racing,
helped Gibbs climb the ranks of the NHRA to vice
president. Currently he's a board mem-
ber of the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum,
where he served as its original direct-
or. Gibbs is the guy - or one of them - that
started the enormously popular NHRA Califor-
nia Hot Rod Reunion, presented by the Automobile
Club of Southern California (now in its
14th year), something thousands of vintage drag
race fans, hot rodders and most import-
antly, old-time drag racers, can be thankful for.
In this interview, Gibbs talks about how
the Reunion (set for Sept. 30-Oct. 2, Bakersfield,
Calif.) started and what it means to those
who lived it. (Bill Groak in
www.HotRodhotline.com)
*There seems to have appeared a new SCAM on the forefront...we have heard that some
sellers are being approached by someone by
telephone or fax saying that they have a buyer
for the car but need an upfront "finders fee" of
$299. These people say they are in the
midwest but we're not sure where they are. We
would recommend that you ignore this type
of solicitation. We think it's bogus and a
scam. We want to remind you about the Scams
that seem to surface from time to time on the
internet. The most common scam is the one
where the buyer wants to send you more money than
you are asking for the car and asks
you to wire them the difference. There is NO
REASON why this should have to happen. It
is a SCAM. For more information see our page on
SCAMS. (Www.Hotrodhotline.com)

*We had another storm come through here about the
same time we all got hit at Bonneville.
We have a real lake. Have not seen any sign of the

storm that hit here several weeks ago & flooded
the lake & it did help. We have plenty of
time for this to all dry out before the Sept
