*Obituary notice for Allen Strasburg was in the Deseret Morning News on Sunday.  Allen was
the father of four 2 Club members.  They put  "Big Al" in one of Terry Nish's liners to try to make
him the fifth 2 Club member in the family.  Even though he lost fifty pounds he was still too large a
guy to handle things comfortably and they aborted the attempts.  The Strasburgs run a very busy
machine shop where they rebuild engines.  They have helped many racers because they were less
than three hours from the salt.  This is a personal thing for me in another way.  I have known Allen
since I was three.  We lived four blocks from their family home.  As kids we played at the Powell
home, the Smuin's, the Stewart's, all in the block next to the Strasburgs.  We went to the same
church, a block from his home.  He was one of the "big" kids just older than my circle of friends
and we always watched that group.  Allen came home alive from WW II...Glen Powell, a cousin
of mine and one of his contemporaries who lived half way between our homes, didn't.  Four of the
five Schow boys who lived across the street from Glen were also in that war.  I remember the joy
when they all came home alive.  As you can tell that obituary brought back a lot of memories for
me.  Allen was one of the founding members of the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association.  The
family was a big part of the early years of the organization.  It's fitting that the viewing is at the
Olpin Mortuary in Pleasant Grove.  Dee Olpin was a car guy too.  Wes (resent by Glen Barrett)

*Allan R. Strasburg (passed away).  Another of our good friends gone on to greater things
at the great slat flat in the sky.  Ken Kelley
*George, I assume you knew Allen Strasburg.  He died yesterday...Funeral Tuesday.  I sent
word to Cook.  He was one of the originators of USFRA.  (Mary West)
*Thank you for passing this on -- they were right -- what I remember most about Jack
(Mendenhall) was how incredibly nice he was. I only met him once or twice, but we talked
for a long time and he told such wonderful stories.  (Adriane Ridder)
*Thanks for this announcement. We received a call from Jack's (Mendenhall) niece inform-
ing us of his death.  He certainly will be missed.  Bob and I stopped by and visited him
about 3 months ago.  He was at that time ill and in bed, but his good humor and grace
certainly never left him.  He was quite a guy, and as you said, such a gentleman--a gentle
soul.  (Sharon and Bob Muravez, aka "Floyd Lippincott Jr")
*Thank you for letting us know about Jack.  I gave it to our newletter editor to put in our
paper.  Send our deepest regards to his family...Johnny & Brenda Anderson  (See website
*Thank you for sending along the sad news about Jack.  Jean and I were on vacation last
week, driving the Pony Express trail across Utah and Nevada.  We tried to meet up with
Ron Christensen of USFRA in SLC but it didn't work out.  We'll get together with him in
later September on another planned vacation.  We remember Jack well.  What a friendly
guy.  We have a video of his collection, and I think I'll put it in the VCR again tonight.

*NASCAR Comes to Oakland, by Tom Motter. On October 14, 1951, big-time stock car racing
came to the Oakland Stadium. On this date the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing
(NASCAR) sanctioned a 400-lapper (250 miles) on the big, 5/8-mile track. NASCAR regulars
such as Fonty Flock, Dick Rathman, Allen Heath, and Marvin Panch were in the lineup for the
first Grand National Stock Car race, right along with local favorites like Woody Brown, Marvin
Burke, Bob Caswell and Johnny Soares. West Coast zone supervisor Johnny Mantz, who had
been assigned that post by NASCAR just two weeks before the race, over saw the event. Driv-
ing a 1950 Mercury, BCRA’s (Bay Cities Racing Association) own Marvin Burke, their 1949
midget driving champion, came in first picking up a winner’s check in the amount of $1,875. Bob
Caswell, driving a ‘50 Plymouth, finished second, and Woody Brown (BCRA’s 1950 midget
champion) driving a 1950 Olds “88”, finished third. The race started at least 32 cars, the oldest
a ‘48 Hudson, and the newest 1951-year models represted by Oldsmobile, For, Plymouth,
Studebaker, Nash, Hudson and even a 1951 model Henry J. It was amazing how many fans
were rooting for the Henry J as it ran mostly down on the lower apron of the track.  After an
absence of two years, NASCAR came back to Oakland.  On March 28, 1954 the reconfigured
track at Oakland was again the site of a NASCAR “Grand National” race for late model stock
cars. This time it was to be 250 laps (125 miles) over the ½-mile dirt/Asphalt track ( trying to
make the track more racy, what they had done was to fill in the high banked turns with dirt, leav-
ing the straights asphalt). Qualifying was done the day before, and by the end of the day twenty-
six cars had been entered into Sunday’s big race. Fastest of the group was Hershel McGriff, with
a qualifying speed of 55.624 mph. All the West Coast regulars were there, including Woody
Brown, Johnny Soares, Clyde Palmer, and Ben Gregory, along with some of NASCAR’s “big-
guns,” Marvin Panch and Lee Petty.  Dick Rathman, winner of ten previous NASCAR Grand
Nationals, had been pre-entered but didn’t arrive at the track until qualifying had ended (his tow
vehicle had broken down near Reno, Nevada and he hooked the broken down tow vehicle up to
his race car and drove to Oakland.) and had to start at the very back of the field on race day.
McGriff and Marvin Panch led the early stages of the race but at lap 143 Rathman took his 1951
Hudson Hornet into the lead and stayed there until the checkered flew.  Rathman became the first
“last to first” winner in NASCAR Grand National history, Panch finished second, a lap down,
while Johnny Soares placed third in his ‘54 Dodge. Lee Petty, driving the now familiar number 42,
finished sixth, eighteen laps off the pace.  Reprinted from-A History of the Oakland Stadium

*Thanks for the update and I've wanted to go to the (Mendenhall) Museum. We have been
busy with the Old Yeller II and sending you update...I bought the legendary Spurgin-
Giovanine Roadster Dry Lakes and Bonneville racer with a Chevy 4 that held records for
many years and it was transformed using chassis and body to a Bonneville Roadster as the
Motherskill Special with a Jimmy' 6 (rear engine configuration). Both configurations were
the feature in Hot Rod Magazine and on cover in 1949... tons of press... I will send you
more information as it had been sitting in a backyard in Apple Valley for over 35 years.
  Stay in touch- Ernie Nagamatsu
*June 10, Willow Springs International Raceway- Open Testing, by Ernie Nagamatsu. Billy Krause
raced the Old Yeller II in 1960. He is a legendary race-car driver that race against Shelby-
Gurney- Hill- Moss- Brabham- and beat them all at times. He was younger than his peers of the
day, racing sports cars, after racing Midgets. Bill was noted for his winning D Jaguar Special -
Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage- 450 S Maserati- and he was the very first Cobra driver for Carroll
Shelby. We duplicated his "Von Dutch" designed (Von Dutch was his brother in law) and sur-
prised him. Bill tested on the track with extremely fast modified Porsches and Formula cars. It
was a great and rare moment for the "on track" reunion as Bill does not attend many Motor-
sports events or reunions. We are planning to present the Old Yeller II at the special invitation
Classic Car event at Art Center in Pasadena ...as it is the 75th Anniversary of the College of
Automotive Design- Sunday-July 17th. The car will be taken to Monterey to the Laguna Seca
Raceway for a special mid week Charity race where Bill Krause is scheduled to race the Old
Yeller II- July 19-20th. If plans go well and Bill is comfortable racing the car... he was told the
he can take my "seat" at the famous Monterey Historics as the theme is American Road Racing
Specials (Old Yeller is on the web page for the event) on August 19-21, 2005. Ernie.  Names
such as "The Ardent Alligator," The BuMerc, ONO, "Old Grey Mare," Tahis Special, Old
Yeller, and Baldwin Special achieved their place in motor racing history as did Miller, Kurtis,
Edwards, Cunningham, Scarab and Chaparral. The creative talents and the motivation to win
of individuals like Max Balchowsky, Roger Barlow, Sterling Edwards, Frank Kurtis, John Fitch,
Jack Hagemann, Dick Troutman and Tom Barnes, Ken Miles, Miles and SamCollier, Briggs
Cunningham, Brooks Stevens, Lance Reventlow and Jim Hall, have brought a uniquely American
element to the world of motor racing. "The best of the American specials are treasures sought
after by individual collectors and museums alike and an historic gathering of these unique
machines is anticipated for what has become the premier vintage event in the U.S.," said Earle,
whose organization, General Racing, Ltd., founded the Monterey Historic Automobile Races in
  1974. (Ernie Nagamatsu)
