*My nephews son, Tony Thompson, is driving some
class of Taxicab at Perris Auto Speed-
way. This is a report from Tony's Dad to let me
know how he is doing., I first saw him race
at Orange Show Speedway when he was driving a
Honda in the Hornet class. Uncle Bob
gave him a few tips about navigating a 1/4 mile flat paved oval
and how to get around the
guy in front of you. I believe he started sixth in the Dash that
night, and won the race. And
I believe he started sixth in the feature and won that one too.
He finished the season as
Rookie of the year and was 3 points shy of winning the Track
Championship. So keep your
eyes out for him because he is a really good driver. Cory's
school will certainly help him.

*A History of the Oakland Speedway 1931-1941 by Tom Motter
All of the stock car races held at the Oakland Speedway occurred
after the AAA pulled out of the
West Coast in January 1936. The one notable exception was an AAA
Championship Stock Car
race held on May 6, 1934. In 1936, Charlie Curryer and his
American Racing Association (ARA)
took over the sanctioning of almost all of the races held at the
track until its closure in 1941. Those
races included all of the “Big Car” races held at Oakland plus
eight Stock Car races that varied in
length from 200 to 300 miles on the big, one-mile track. Mostly,
these stock car (and in some
cases, pick-up trucks) races were exciting (lots of crashes) and
most of the drivers came from the
local Big Car ranks. The greatest attraction, however, was the
fact that now the fans could see
examples of their own “family buggy” being driven by daredevil
drivers at speeds that usually were-
n’t possible on the streets and highways of everyday America.
Curryer, a promoting genius, pro-
moted his first three races (Big Cars) on the Oakland track
beginning in March 1936. Knowing
that almost all race fans’ interest in racing usually peaks during
the annual Memorial Day, 500-mile
race at Indianapolis, he decided this would be a perfect time to
present his first major Stock Car
racing program to Oakland fans.
200 Mile Stock Car Race
On the back page of the June 1, 1936 program for Curryer’s first
“Pacific Coast Stock Car
Championship” race was the following announcement: “Today you
fans of the Oakland Speed-
way are witnessing one outstanding racing event of the year in
this 200 mile Stock Car Race.
Eclipsed only by the 500 Mile Classic at Indianapolis this
year this event has taken on major
importance, and throughout the entire country the results are
being watched very closely.”
The entry list included most of the big-name local drivers: Fred
Agabashian, Les Dreisbach, Herk
Edwards, Lynn Deister, Al Chasteen, Lloyd “Lucky” Logan and John
Lotarocca. Heading a list
of drivers from southern California were Tex Peterson, Wally
Pankratz, and Rajo Jack. Tex
Peterson, driving a Ford, held the lead for the first 40 or so
laps but lost it to Rajo Jack (also in a
Ford roadster) at about the 50th lap. Peterson again took the
lead and held it until the halfway
mark when Clint Parder took over (but not for long). On the 100th
lap Rajo Jack, along with riding
mechanic Bill Walker, rolled over three times and crashed out of
the track. Neither man was hurt,
but the race car was totaled. The most cheered driver of the race
was Al Chasteen, driving a Ford
pickup truck complete with cab and pickup bed. On the 162nd cap,
he broke a front axle and
spent 14 laps in the pits for repairs. Upon his return to the
track, he received as much applause as
Deister at the finish line. From the 114th lap on it was Lynn
Deister, at the wheel of his Ford road-
ster, leading all the way to the checkered flag. Sharing the
accolades with Deister at the finish line
was riding mechanic, “Boots” Archer. Finishing behind Deister
were Driesbach, Prankratz, Logan,
Edwards, Foss, Lotarocca, Tex Peterson, Wilbur, Agabashian, and
Parker. Deister’s winning time
for the 200-mile grind was 2 hours, 53 minutes, 2.6 seconds for a
race average speed of 69.34mph.
Charlie’s Rule Book
Stock car racing, a’ la Charlie Curryer’s ARA rules, made for a
good show. Any race promoter
worth his salt knows that rules must sometimes by bent. Curryer’s
“National Stock Car Champion-
ship” race held on September 20, 1936 proved the point. Thirty
cars and drivers filed entry forms;
the rules said that only twenty cars would start the 250-mile
race. Twenty-one cars took the green
flag that Sunday afternoon. The entry form stated that only six
cars of any make could start the
race; twelve of the starters were Fords. Rules stated that all
cars had to be in “factory-stock”
configuration; most cars had extra heavy-duty shock
absorbers/steering knuckles and other
suspension parts. the winning car had a modified carburetor and
was ultimately disqualified, but
only by a vote of the rest of the drivers, not the rule book. As
in the race held the previous
Memorial Day, most of the drivers were local boys, mostly all
members of Curryer’s ARA. Once
again, as in the previous race, there were several drivers from
southern California, most noticeable,
Rajo Jack (in the same Ford that he’d crashed in the earlier
race). Absent from the starting line-up
was Freddie Agabashian who was tied with Art Armstrong for the
points lead in the ARA. The
winner of this race would gain 250 points, and had either one of
them won the race it would have
been enough to win the 1936 Season Championship!
Parker Disqualified, Criss wins!
Clint Parker, driving a Ford roadster, took the checkered flag
first with a winning time of 3 hours,
38 minutes, 5.6 seconds, ahead of Ernie Criss driving a Ford
pickup. After a protest filed by third
place finisher Frank Phillips, the Inspection Committee found
Parker’s carburetor to be “touched
up.” In a most unusual procedure, the winner of the 250-mile
event was determined by a vote of
all twenty of the drivers entered in the race. When polled,
eleven drivers voted to award Ernie
Criss the win, eight voted for Parker and one driver
sustained. All finisher’s moved up one position,
and Parker was disqualified from the race. In 1937 Charlie Curryer
again chose the Memorial Day
weekend to stage his big, “National Stock Car Championship” race.
This time, however, it was to
be a 300-miler! And once again, the field was filled with mostly
ARA drivers, out to gain (or
protect) points accumulated in their run for the year-end ARA
Championship. By now, many of the
drivers had figured out that there were certain advantages to
using Ford’s 1/2 ton pickup as the
“car” of choice for these long, grueling stock car races. First
of all, the pickups had a much larger
radiator than the passenger coupes or roadsters and this solved
the ever-present overheating
problem of the long races. Secondly, the pickup came stock with
beefier suspension parts (axles,
springs, steering and shock absorbers), which offered a major
advantage over the stock suspension
parts of the non-pickup entries in the races. Ernie Criss, winner
of the September 1936 race, again
entered with a pickup. Rajo Jack, always a contender at the
Oakland Speedway, switched from
his regular Ford roadster to a Ford pickup. Paul Swedburg, an up
and coming local midget racer,
also entered with a Ford pickup. Other entries included Joe
Wilbur, Dan Harrison, Bob Frame

Changes at the Speedway for 1938
In 1938, Charlie Curryer, head of the ARA became a managing
Officer of the Oakland Speed-
way association, Inc. For the entire existence of the Speedway,
Lynn Mathewson had held that
position. Now it appeared that Curryer would not only head the
major race sanctioning body at
the track (the ARA) but would also be in charge of general
operations of the entire track as well.
In the race program for a May 1938 Big Car race, Lynn Mathewson is not the manager of the
Oakland Speedway. In his place are listed the names of Charles
Curryer, Ray E. Cook and P.I.
Idleman. An article in the same program alludes to this change in
management. On June 5, 1938,
Charllie Curryer held a 250-mile stock car race on the Oakland
Mile. Fred Agabashian, ARA’s
1937 Points Champion, driving a Chysler, won the race, in 3 hrs.
26 mins, and 10.25 seconds.
Following “Aggie” across the finish line were Ernie Criss, Wally
Pankratz, and Jerry Piper.
