*Phil Hill and Carroll Shelby
selected co-recipients of The Eagle One-Shav Glick Award,
pre-
sented during pre-race ceremonies at the NASCAR Auto Club 500,
February 26, at California
Speedway. Hill, in 1961, became the first American to win a Formula
One world championship.
He also won the 24 Hours of LeMans three times, the 12 Hours of
Sebring three times and num-
erous other national and international racing events. Shelby, was
inducted into the Automotive
Hall of Fame in 1992, has gained fame as a driver, designer/builder
and team manager. In 1959
he won the 24 Hours of LeMans and also set land speed records at the
Bonneville Salt Flats.
After health problems caused his retirement as a driver in 1960, the
Cobra sports car he designed
and built became the first American-conceived car to win the World Manufacturers Grand Tour-
ing Championship in 1965. As a team manager he helped Ford GT win
the World Grand Touring
title. Said Glick of both icons, "Hill and Shelby are both
products of that era in the 1950's
and 60's that has become known as the glory years of sports car
racing, a time when ingen-
uity and industry were rewarded in the racing fraternity. Both
were winners and both
carried the California trademark with great success on the world
racing scene." Previous
winners were Dan Gurney, Wally Parks, Parnelli Jones, Rick
Mears, Les Richter and
J.C. Agajanian. (Alex Litrov and Doug Stokes)

Under the bill, kit cars and replica vehicles will be assigned a certificate of title bearing the same model year designation as the production vehicle it most close- ly resembles. *News from the The American Hot Rod Foundation:
For all drag racing fans, we have put up
about 200 photos from the Tony Nancy
collection. It is clear from his collection that Tony liked
to photograph every stage of every production. We've posted
mostly drag racing shots, from
Bakersfield to Great Britain and beyond. You can also see
much of J.C. Henning’s artwork in
the photo gallery. His drawings of midget and Indy racing
capture beautifully the atmosphere,
excitement and power of circle track racing. Julian
Doty’s collection manages to capture all
aspects of life on the dry lakes and Bonneville in the 40’s
and early 50’s. The first 200 (out of
over 1000) are in the gallery. At present we are working on
the Mario Boffico collection that
came to us via Roy Brizio. Seen together,
Mario’s photos of the earliest Car Shows, from the
LA Armory to the National Oakland Roadster
Show, give us an understanding of the incredible
diversity in hot rod and custom building at this early
stage. If you have a collection you would like
us to scan and add to the archives please contact me.
