*Becca Livington of the Gear Grinders
Car Club sent in the following letter from Bob Webb,
Gear Grinders President, who recently underwent heart transplant
surgery: "Some of you may
have heard that I had a heart replacement completed on
December 12. Everything went
as I was told in that the operation would be less than 4
hours. I was in the ICU for 4 days
and was transferred to a sub ICU on the 5th day. The only
difference is that everyone com-
ing and going in my room had to scrub hands and put on
protective garments. On Tuesday
December 20th I had my first of many biopsies and blood test
with the second one tomor-
row. All of this is at Cedars-Sinai near Beverly Blvd and
Robertson Drive. Too long of a
drive in traffic. The new heart was like having an old tired
motor about to expire and 4
hours later the motor was rebuilt and now runs on “Nitro” and
is supercharged. It will
take awhile to regain my strength and be able to have the
energy that I had about 10 years
ago. The draw back is the medication which has a lot of side
effects. Hope that you all had
a super holiday and will behave for New Years. I will have to
miss the January meeting.
Janice and I would like to thank all of you for your heartfelt
prayers and well wishing."
*...Leroy Newmayer is sick and really in bad
shape. He has been in the hospital for 6 month and
doubtful if he'll ever go home. It sure would be nice if you
would pass his cell number along to
your father and ask him to call Leroy. His cell is
307-260-6364. (George Callaway)
-------------------------------
*LeRoy Neumayer's stepdaughter, Amy
Belveal, has an e-mail address in case you would like
to reach LeRoy. It is belveal@centurytel.net Please
call LeRoy's cell phone (307-260-6364) as
a first priority contact. But if you have something important
to send to him, you can use Amy's
email address. I called and spoke to LeRoy (2 Jan 2006) and he
has been in the nursing home/
assisted living center in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, for the last 6
months, when he stopped smoking.
He has emphysema and is on oxygen and uses a walker. He would
love to hear from his friends
in the landspeed, drag and oval track racing world. The
medication that they give him causes
his immune system to weaken and he has to fight off various
infections. He doesn't know if he
can ever go home to his wife Joan in Pinedale, about 79 miles
away from the Hospital/nursing
home in Jackson Hole, but he continues to hope that he can.
Right now it is snowing up there.
He says he gets enjoyment watching the races on the TV, getting
photos and letters from his
racing friends, and hearing from them by phone. He is still
LeRoy, cheerful and charming and
ready to take on another day. He said he should have quit
smoking a long time ago, but that he
enjoyed every one of them and that he has no regrets as he was
blessed with a good life and a
lot of friends. Joan wants everyone to know how much she
appreciates the financial help and
support that the racing community has given to LeRoy, and
especially for the calls and letters.

*...Grandpa's name was Warren Wickham. He called his
car the Sunset Auto Supply Special.
That's the car that Rosie Roussel, Nick Valenta, Allen Heath
and others drove. Speedlox is
constantly gaining momentum toward production. It has been received
really well at the season-
end National races as well as with folks like Ron Shaver
and Vic Edelbrock. (Vicki James)

*A lot of people aren't aware that in 1957 Ak Miller
contested the final running of the Mille
Miglia 1000 mile open road race around Italy. The small crew
he had was largely made up
of American servicemen responding to a story in Hot Rod that
he was looking for help. The
car, El Caballo II, ran only that one race and still exists in
private hands. (Joe Stephan)
