*Will Scott (Gold Coast Roadster and Racing
Club/SCTA) is scheduled for open heart surgery,
on Dec 15, at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, CA. He went in to
the doctor for a check up
and was given tests. Angiogram changed to open heart surgery.
(Evelyn Roth)
*Al Teague underwent surgery on Dec 6, to repair the
mitral valve in his heart. All went well and
he is now in a regular ward. This message came from Landspeed Louise
who spoke to him today
and reports that he is doing well. Al is antsy to return home on
Friday. Landspeed suggests that
you use email to send your good wishes and prayers, as he does need
to rest in order to recover.
Or send your emails to Landspeed at
bonneville@adelphia.net and
she will give them to Al.
*Just got home and got the word from Glen Barrett
that Bob Webb got called from his heart
transplant group and he is going to have a new heart installed
tonight according to Glen. This is
all I know for now. Keep Bob in your thoughts. (Bob Sykes Jr)
*I just wanted to let you know that Bob Webb is on
his way to the hospital where he has a new
heart waiting for him. He will be at Cedar Sinai. We’ve been
told that he is reporting to the
South Tower. Neil Thompson is recovering at home
now from his triple by-pass and feeling
better. (Becca Livingston)
*Al (Teague) is doing well. Hope to get him home
tomorrow. (Jane Teague)
*Talked to Bob Webb's son-in-law this morning at breakfast, the operation went great and the
heart was a "perfect" fit. Bob was in recovery when he left. We
commented that Bob will finally
have a heart as we wern't really sure before. (J.D. Tone)
*We’ve heard that Al Teague is home from the
hospital today. (Becca Livingston)
*Bob Webb (Gear Grinders/SCTA) had a good night and the breathing tube should be removed
today. No phone calls or visitors allowed. Bob should be
transfered to a private room by the
weekend. Jan and family thank everyone for the prayers and
concern. (Glen Barrett)

*Palm Springs Revival Races, November 18-20, 2005. 1959 Old Yeller II
Buick Special, Ernie
Nagamatsu-driver. Friday- Weather was clear and
sunny. The temporary race circuit was on
the Jacqueline Cochran Airport runways in Indio near Palm Springs.
The original well known
Palm Springs Sports Car Races was held on the Airport at Palm Springs
in the 1950s. The track
for the weekend was a 2.2 mile track and really challenging with two
sets of difficult chicanes on
both straights... and less than 90 degree corners at the ends. There
was a lot of dust and gravel
on the surface and made for slippery sliding around on tarmac. Our
Group 4 was for historic cars
of the Palm Springs genre. A blue Devin with a very fast Chevy engine
and with inboard disc
brakes and a new old Proctor Special of the late 1950's with a Chevy
with Holly 800 with special
heads so competition tough on topside with cars with horsepower. The
first session had the Lotus
& and Lotus 11 moving fast through the chicanes and braking deep like
little hornets. Two prac-
tice sessions and dust/gravel everywhere on the track. Saturday-
Morning 1st qualifying session-
Changed tires as the flying Devin had Hoosiers...near end of
session...throttle got stuck on firewall
and came through grandstand turn less than 90 degrees and end of fast
straight...and no throttle as
was jammed high...made it through and went off side of track for tow
pick up. Opened a bigger
hole in firewall. The distributor off again and could not keep in
right position. Afternoon Final
Qualifying session- We had posted fasted lap time but Devin did not
have transponder we think.
Sunday - Morning session - had fastest time...car stalled coming in
(distributor moved internally
and will not stay in place). Afternoon race- Organizer put Devin on
pole at last minute but he did
have fast car...but Devin did not have any Hoosier tires left (ground
up by rough airport tarmac
surface) so he had used Dunlop tires in rear for race...and was 4
seconds slower than our times
in the morning. Devin driver comes over and he asked me “if we should
put on a show” (hard
racing- no blocking – change of leads)...I agreed and told Proctor
driver...By end of first lap I
took inside and passed Devin...and I was able with strong new race
motor and new Goodyear
tires to move well and then let them pass...we changed lead several
times and my power was
slowly going off but Proctor Special disappeared behind us and could
not keep up...last lap I
was on tail of Devin to the finish line and could not push past...as
power was off and on "cool
off lap" and coming off track...car stalled out near the
Grandstands...tried to start and had flames
coming up and out of all 6 Stromburg carburetors...fire got put out
(had 5 Firemen around car
and had to hold them off from spraying retardant as that would ruin
motor-they used gloves to
put out fire) and got towed in...the distributor turned
internally/rotated again for the 3rd time dur-
ing weekend and caused the timing to go so far off- would not run.
The announcer was "going
bonkers" thinking it was a fender to fender race...and for the first 7
laps...the Old Yeller II "was
on song" as they say in England...as the tires were really hooking
up...and new race motor really
pulling. So...second place by a bumper is not bad considering it was
to be only a "test weekend"
with new motor put in at very last minute (blew up our motor the week
before at Willow Springs
Races...and suspension changes to improve the car and power going away
at the end of race...
Announcer kept saying over and over…since the Old Yeller II had raced
in the original Palm
Springs races… “it will be a magical moment indeed if the Old Yeller
II could just win.” Racing
was great fun with very tough track layout…and the chicanes were
really eye opening for sure- 4
-3 on backside & 4-3 (the 4 being really difficult being wide and
last being a decreasing angle to
chicane) along front straight at speed! (Ernie Nagamatsu)

*There has been a lot of controversy in the past year about the
licensing and “smogging” of Rods
and Classics in California, including a high profile “raid” of
Boyd Coddington's shop to drive
the “fear” into rodders in the state. Since then SEMA has been
working with the State to come
up with a reasonable solution to this problem. Vic's Place has
reproduction signs, neons, clocks,
bar stools, original, restored gas pumps and parts. Right Coast

*Illinois Blue Dots: A SAN-supported bill
that would allow antique vehicles to display a blue
light of up to one-inch diameter as part of the vehicle’s
rear stop lamps was signed into law by
Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich. The measure recognizes
that blue dot taillights have no
detrimental impact on safety and enables enthusiasts to
modify their vehicles to recall the glory
days of the hot rod era in America. (SEMA)
*Iowa, New York, Virginia Spinners: The SAN
defeated legislation in Iowa, New York and
Virginia that would have prohibited motor vehicles equipped with
spinner hubcaps or wheels. The
bills ignored the fact that these products have no proven
detrimental effect on motor vehicle
safety and are not prohibited by Federal law. (SEMA)
*Kentucky Inoperable Vehicles: Kentucky Governor
Ernie Fletcher signed into law SEMA
model legislation to place limits on local ordinances that
prevent automobile collectors from
pursuing their hobby. Under the new law, junked, wrecked or
inoperable vehicles, including
parts cars, stored on private property would only be required to
be maintained out of ordinary
public view. It would apply to owners or occupants of land in a
city, county, or unincorporated
area. The new law applies to automobile collectors, defined as
those who collect and restore
motor vehicles whether as a hobby or a profession. To comply,
collectors would maintain hobby
cars out of ordinary public view, a sight line within normal
visual range by a person on a public
street or sidewalk adjacent to the private property. This
provision would be achieved by means
of suitable fencing, trees, shrubbery, etc. (SEMA)
*Maine Inoperable Vehicles: Working with
officials from the Maine Department of Environ-
mental Protection, the Maine Municipal Association and the
state’s vehicle enthusiast community,
the SAN amended a bill that threatened to repeal the current
hobbyist exemption from the state’s
graveyard laws. The original bill would have required hobbyists
to get business licenses and be
regulated as automobile graveyards. Under the SAN amendment,
hobbyists will retain the exem-
ption but will be required to screen project cars from public
view and properly handle vehicle
fluids to prevent environmental contamination. The bill, with
the SEMA amendment, was passed
by the Maine Legislature and signed into law by Governor John
Baldacci. (SEMA)
*Maine Optional Lighting: SAN-supported
legislation to permit accent lighting on motor
vehicles has been signed by Maine Governor John Baldacci. The
new law permits the use of
optional accent lighting that meets certain conditions,
including color and intensity restrictions.
The new law also provides for under carriage neon lighting,
although not for use on public road
ways, and allows blue interior and dash lighting under some
circumstances. (SEMA)
*Maine Custom Vehicles: Maine Governor John
Baldacci signed into law a version of SEMA
model legislation to create a registration class for custom
vehicles. Under the new law, custom
vehicles are defined as at least 30-years old and of a model
year after 1948 or manufactured to
resemble a vehicle from that era. The bill also allows customs
to have a body constructed from
non-original materials and assigns these vehicles the same
model-year designation as the produc-
tion vehicle they most closely resemble, allowing qualifying
replicas and kit cars to be accommo-
dated under this registration class. The measure requires the
Chief of the State Police to gather
a committee comprised of representatives from the custom vehicle
industry to provide advice
and technical assistance regarding potential inspection
standards and procedures. (SEMA)
