Thanks were given to all members who helped at El
Mirage this past weekend for the course pre-prep for
the season. Not too much wrong with the lakebed except
a few sink holes and chips caused by the dirt drying
too fast. It may need some repair after the July meet
but overall if it holds up it should be a pretty good
course. There was good representation from GCRR: Larry
Pederson and wife, Motsey Motsenbocker, Tim
Rochlitzer, Wes & Wendy Hutchins and others. BLM does
keep track of who helps to maintain El Mirage, of all
the groups who use the lakebed. The group with the
most volunteers will get an award.
SCTA NEWS: Wendy Hutchins went to the last rep.
meeting. Matt listed all clubs who where in attendance
(only about 1/2 were there). SCTA needs someone to
operate the club camera, Matt wasn’t sure about all
the details. A donation of $5000 was received for the
SCTA Motorcycle class. The president of the
Sidewinders, Tom Iden, has terminal cancer and is
undergoing chemotherapy.
21 pre-entries already received for Speed Week. Poster
and rulebook sent out to SCTA-BNI members. $516 has
been received in March for Internet Sales of SCTA
items.
Any changes for the 2002 rulebook must be received
soon. (date?)
NO GLASS is allowed on the lakebed at any time, in any
form, period. (Not even Mayo jars).
NO WOOD WITH NAIL allowed on lakebed at any time.
Info was discussed re “El Mirage Days” for Saturday
May 5th, the day before racing. How to register, where
to meet, etc. Our club is the smallest, in relation to
the number running cars at El Mirage, but the people
involved the better. All participation in this type of
event, to clean up the general lakebed, is helpful in
keeping the lakebed open for later use. (Again BLM
keeps track of which organizations participate).
Inspection will open at noon on Saturday, May 5th. A
season pass for El Mirage will be available for $270
per year. (It is not known yet if that includes class
changes or not).
Lonnie Martin, who was an alternate for the BLM
meetings is now a sanctioned member (like Chuck
Kalbach).
GCRR News: Check out the web site www.oilstick.com for
pictures of all club events. Photos are taken and
posted by Evelyn Roth and she is doing a great job.
You can also look at photos of Don Oaks’ ranch and
shop on the site.
Jack Mendenhall mentioned an idea of having a club
car, sponsored by GCRR that any club member could
drive.
Reviewed Club duties: #1 Patrol, Don Oakes will
handle, #2 picking up fire extinguisher etc..
The GCRR is looking to order more club decals. A
proposed sample was shown with the following pricing:
1000 min. order = $638.80 + $30 set up. (2000 is only
$50 more). Some members thought that was high.
Suggested dividing the decal total into inside and
outside type decals. (These are for club members
only). If anyone has a contact or info that will save
money please call Matt or Fred.
Reviewed Hall of Fame Logo from Mary West. Many
thought the colors were too bland, discussed more
contrasting, bright colors. It is still in the works.
Also the counting of the Hall of Fame ballots will be
at Tim R.’s house in Santa Barbara on Monday May 7th.
7-8 members volunteered to meet there and help count.
NOTE: There has been more SCTA club participation in
the voting than ever before.
EDELBROCK TOUR: Still on hold till further notice.
Date has not been set yet, Jack is still waiting for a
call back to confirm. May have to wait until fall if
it can’t be scheduled soon.
June 5th meeting is now set for DON OAKS RANCH @ 2650
Latigo Drive, off Ballard Canyon Road, in the
Solvang/Buellton area. It is only 13 mins. from the
Mendenhall Museum.
Tom Johnson, who has not attended meetings for awhile,
has diabetes, and has lost 30 lbs.
Chuck Small showed a video on the GM Vortec 4200
engine for SUV’s and Trucks.
The meeting ended at 8:30pm.
El Mirage, Saturday May 5th, saw a large contingence
of Gold Coast workers present for the El Mirage Days.
Ernie Hashim, Buzz Buswell and a new club member
candidate came from Bakersfield. Mike Mendosa and
Marlyn came down from Oakley. Tom, Bob and Carla
McDonald were there as well as Don Oaks, Matt
Williams, Brian and Tim Rochlitzer. (Hope we didn't
forget anyone)
SCTA had around 130 people participate vs a small
turnout for the other organizations. Thanks to all
club members who helped.
Sunday the 6th turned out good for the Raspberry
Rocket. We tuned to go 220 and went 223.6. Mike
Mendosa had tire problems but coaxed a 117 out of his
bike.
Monday night, the 7th, the Hall of Fame ballots were
counted with the results as follows:
Historic Vehicle ……………………….Kaplan and Carr Lakester
Presently Running Vehicle…………..BRM Racing, (Doug
Robinson)

year's voting was at about 45%.
Hopefully next year will bring an even better turn
out.
Next meeting will be at Don Oaks ranch (The Oaks),
2650 Latigo Drive, Solvang CA
Thanks to Will Scott for sending and
getting the information together for this newsletter.
